Everything in our polo section falls into one of two families, and they wear very differently. Knowing which is which saves a return.
Woven polos
A woven polo is made from cloth — usually cotton or a cotton blend — cut and sewn like a shirt. The fabric has little stretch, so the shape you see is the shape you get. Collars stay flatter, the body hangs straighter, and the piece reads slightly more formal. This is the polo to wear under a blazer.
Knit polos
A knit polo is made from yarn looped into fabric, the same way a sweater is. It stretches, drapes closer to the body and softens with wear. Ribbed knits have visible vertical lines and hold their shape well; flat knits are smoother and lighter. A knit polo works on its own or under an overshirt, and it forgives a slightly imperfect fit better than a woven one.
Which to choose
- Want something sharp with trousers? Woven, in cotton.
- Want comfort and a relaxed line? Knit, in viscose or a wool blend.
- Warm climate? Linen or a linen blend, woven — it breathes best.
- Between sizes? Knit stretches, woven does not. Size up in woven.
