Outerwear is the piece people see first. Our edit favours clean, versatile layers — overshirts, unstructured jackets and tailored coats — cut to sit well over knitwear and shirting. Considered proportions, quiet colours, built to see out many seasons.
Neutral wins: navy, stone, charcoal and camel go with everything beneath. A stone or camel layer lifts a dark outfit; charcoal and navy keep it understated. One coat in a neutral tone will outwork three in bold colours.
An overshirt bridges the mildest days, a jacket handles transitional weather, and a tailored coat finishes a look in the cold. Choose by temperature and by what sits underneath — outerwear should layer cleanly, never fight the fit.

Measure your chest over a shirt or knit you would layer beneath, keeping the tape relaxed. Outerwear is meant to sit over other layers, so account for what you will wear underneath.
The shoulder seam should sit just past your shoulder, the chest should close comfortably over a knit, and the length should cover the hips. Sleeves should reach the wrist with a layer beneath.
Look at the cloth, the lining and the finishing — clean seams, functional pockets, and a collar that sits well. Natural fibres and a considered cut age far better than fast-fashion shells.
Take your usual size for a trim layer; size up if you will wear heavy knits beneath. Overshirts wear closer than coats.
Follow the care label — most tailored coats are dry-clean only, while cotton overshirts can be machine-washed cold. Brush wool coats and store on a broad hanger to keep their shape.
